The SDML is a small, disposable, plastic break-away device which separates from itself under specific tension. Upon separation, both components of the SDML are self-sealing, preventing flow of fluids (blood, urine, medication) or gases.
The exposed faces can be swabbed and reconnected, allowing flow to resume. In addition to protecting patients from pain and tissue damage, the SDML prevents strangulation of babies by IV lines.
Upon disconnection, increased backpressure triggers a pump alarm, alerting medical personnel.
The SDML also functions as a self-flushing medication port and a saline/heparin lock, in addition to many other medical applications.
The device offers the same benefits in its application as a urinary disconnect. The SDML can be adapted for any application. Essentially, anywhere where medical lines are used on a patient, the benefits of the SDML can be realized.
